Assistants may seem like an unnecessary addition—to say nothing of the extra cost—but you might be surprised to learn that using an assistant can really benefit you as a professional photographer. Let’s take a closer look at the benefits of using an assistant and what you should do if you find yourself without one on a crucial job.

Benefits of Using an Assistant

There are numerous benefits to using an assistant while you are working a photography job. The primary benefit is the fact that your assistant can be responsible for your equipment—both carrying it and setting it up. This makes the process of lugging your equipment into the photo space much less of a hassle and helps free up your time for more important work, such as ensuring all of your settings are where they need to be, scoping out the best spaces in the venue for photographs, making final notes with your client, and so on.

Another benefit to having an assistant is that you will always have an extra pair of hands there in case you need assistance or a second eye on something.

If you can’t use an assistant…

Unfortunately, it’s not always feasible to use an assistant. Sometimes your assistant may need to cancel or you simply can’t afford to pay someone to work as your assistant on every job. In these cases, the best thing you can do is show up as early as you can to the venue. This will give you enough time to bring in all your equipment, set it aside in a safe space, and begin setting it up without needing to rush. It may not be as hassle-free having an assistant there to help you, but sometimes you have to make do with what you have as a photographer.
