When an Event Photographer Should Use Flash

Generally, event photographers prefer using natural lighting, this is due to the fact that it prevents noisy photos and makes all your shots to be cool.

However, there are instances when you may not have access to natural lighting as an event photographer, it situation like this, using flash may be the last resort.

Ordinarily, you shouldn’t use flash all the time as a photographer; only use it when it has become very necessary. Below are some of the situations to use flash when covering an event.

#1. Indoors

When covering an event that is being hosted indoors, you need to use flash as a lighting source. In fact, if you don’t have an assistant, cross lighting the venue is recommended.

This will enable you to have more light as possible to take your shots. However, to get a more natural look, you need an external flash unit. Internal flash will always produce a dull and flattened image.

#2. Outdoor (During Day Time)

When the venue of the event you are covering is outdoor with intense sunlight, you definitely need to use a flash.

When using a flash in an Outdoor event during the daytime, the flash will always act as a second source of light. This will definitely help to fill areas where the image is underexposed.

#3. Light trails

You can also use flash when you want to freeze the motion in a photograph. This will give you great control over the light rails, thus enabling you to use it to your advantage.

This particular effect is applied when an event photographer is working on a low light situation. The flash will enable you to take mind-blowing shots by freezing the motion in the photograph.

Generally, using flash enables you to be more creative in your shots as a photographer. However, it is advisable to use an external flash when covering an indoor event as most times, internal flash doesn’t produce a good result.
