Las Vegas Portrait Photographer | ISO SOS
As a Las Vegas portrait photographer, you will need to be very familiar with your camera’s settings and functions in order to take the best photographs possible. One of the most important yet misunderstood features on your camera is the ISO.
Your camera’s ISO essentially acts as a measurement of how sensitive your camera is to the light filtering through the lens. A higher ISO is more sensitive, and a lower ISO is less sensitive. The ISO setting will need to change depending on the natural lighting and artificial lighting in the shooting locale.
A higher ISO setting will technically allow more light to filter into the photos—thus helping when you are shooting in a location with dim lighting—but this may come at the cost of the photo quality. Photos which are taken with too high ISO are often grainy and have little detail or crispness to them. You should avoid taking indoor photos with a high ISO because the quality will almost always be subpar, especially if the lighting in the room is very dim.
Thankfully, you don’t have to give up when it comes to taking photos in a dimly lit area. To avoid issues with your ISO in these types of situations, make sure that you are always carrying an off-camera flash. An off-camera flash will produce much better lighting results than simply turning up your ISO setting. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t sometimes take advantage of a high ISO! There will, after all, always be times where you need to use it. Just remember that you need to keep the setting level in check to avoid messy, grainy photos that are often the result of a too-high ISO setting.
